A great deal of thought went into what we wanted to achieve with our design and décor
We didn’t want to build just another coastal style Guest Lodge in Plettenberg Bay, however luxurious and pretty. We wanted to create something different, something unique – accommodation that was an expression of who we are and where we come from – a home-from-home for our guests that is an extension of our hospitality as hosts.
Our inspiration is the memories we have from childhoods spent on our grandparents’ farm, “Christiana” in the Somerset East area of the South-Western Cape Interior – an area that is semi-arid and part of the Karoo. Our days there were happy, and when I think back on them I remember a deep sense of warmth and family togetherness. Those were free, joyful days, filled with abundance – the abundance of family love and an abundance of food, cakes, sweets and cold-drinks – Ouma always had something for us when we came running in from playing on the farm.
It is this experience of comfort and well-being that one seeks on a holiday …
and so we have extended as far as we can the memories of our Karoo childhoods through both the architecture and the décor.
We have sought to re-create the sense of space and light that one experiences in the semi-desert with particular features of the architecture: wide passageways, wide, solid counter-tops in the bathrooms and the communal kitchen, wider and taller than normal doors, high ceilings and of course – lots of windows to let in the light.
We have complemented this design in the décor with colours that are reminiscent of the Karoo environment – browns, sand, taupes and sepias with the addition of lots of white, and splashes of blue to remind one that we are by the sea – if the constant whisper (and occasional roaring) of the waves at nearby Robberg Beach is not reminder enough. An abundance of natural wood features and white interior (‘plantation’) shutters in all the bedrooms add an integral coastal-style touch, and the promise of coziness and privacy.
Clean lines and minimalist, modern fittings are ‘broken’ with contrasting pieces – from aged cane chairs to an old chest, warm bed-throws, rugs, couches and cushions in muted browns, blue and sand colours, to unpainted porcelain light fittings and wrought-iron chandeliers.
The effect is a unique blend of modern, minimalist, contemporary African and old farm-house – with views over the ‘vlei’ (wetland), indigenous bush all round, and the sound and salt-smell of the ocean.
The effect is a unique blend of modern, minimalist, contemporary African and old farm-house...
The Lodge has also been designed in such a way as to blur the distinction between interior and exterior in many areas …
and is west facing to make the most of the spectacular sunsets and intense golden afternoon light that bathes Plettenberg Bay. The overall effect is of nature – lots of light, sun, warmth and open air, with interior colours and effects that blend into the environment. Within this, the layout of the rooms ensures absolute privacy for our guests, but with the option of joining in with others in the communal lounge, kitchen area and pool areas.

Room Layout
- The design of the bedrooms ensure VIP privacy while still being full of light at all times of the day;
- Bedroom layouts are uncluttered and functional in design yet luxurious, with soft linen and mohair blankets;
- Décor is based on a blend of texture and minimalism – white is broken with soft colour, cherry & imperial oak wood veneers contrast with white interior shutters, cane chairs with modern light fittings – modern and traditional combine to create comfort and promote relaxation;
- All rooms have tea and coffee facilities and wall-mounted flat screen TVs offering a wide range of local and international channels;
- Bedrooms have wide balconies with views over the wetlands, nature area, Robberg or the ocean; skilful planning ensures optimum views from the majority of rooms;
- Rooms 4, 5 and 11 are designed and decorated with honeymoon couples in mind.
Bathrooms: All the rooms have en-suite bathrooms. They are spacious with enamel coated German-made steel baths, separate showers, separate toilets and underfloor heating in most.
